Looking forward to 2005

  #

It's pretty exciting to look forward to 2005.  Peter Himmelmann DID write back and said that he wants to come and it will be February or March.  (be still my beating heart!!)  Erika is on target for a March CD release concert here.  (The CD produced at Fantasy Studios is amazing, make sure that you get a copy.)  In April we have a visiting professor from CC here - Bernice Lewis.  We definitely will see Zoe, Peter Mulvey & Brian Joseph again at some point next year.

On top of all of these, we are looking at several repeats from this year.  I'm still waiting to hear back on when Chris Smither and John Gorka will schedule us in.  BUT... talks with Christine Lavin's agent are going very well.  Catie Curtis (we have an in through Erika) says that she will play here on her next stop in Colorado and we're working to put together a date with Roy Bookbinder.

We look forward to another great year with y'all...

Friends House Concert Fun Facts

  #

Did you know that the The Gazette "Best of 2004" (page 19) choose l'il 'ol us as a "worthy contender" in the best live music in small venues category for the Chris Smither show?  In a town of 400,000+ people!  Is that not REALLY cool?  Thank you to Bill Reed for all his support of us!

Thank you also to the CS Independent for their ongoing inclusion of us in their What's Playing Around column.  We truly appreciate your support on all our endeavours.  The community is growing!  Hey... log into their website before September 7th and vote for their annual "Best of the Springs" .  And what would be the best venue for live music????

FHC featured on House Concert Connection

  #

Did you know that house concerts aren't just a local phenom?  A website linking nationwide house concerts spotlighted our l'il 'ol series here this month.  Check out the House Concert connection or the article on Friends House Concerts.  Texas is definitely THE state for house concerts according to the listings here.  I'm going to try and plan business trips around checking out some of the other venues...

We were sort of surprised by this one - but people do concertrate on the music and less on the artists.  I guess that means that we can't skimp on the talent, huh?

In general, people all wanted to keep the concerts small and intimate.   All liked the potluck aspect of the appetizers, but we need to work on making sure that all "know the drill" before they come.  Another communication thing to work on...

Thank You!

  #

Thank you for responding to our survey last week.  We are truly happy with the response we got to last week's survey.  Over 20% of you took the time to answer the questions and we've posted the condensed results on the website.  We don't want to bore you with the details, but click here to see the results if you are interested.  The comments were very constructive and we're going to make a couple of changes to the website over the summer to incorporate your suggestions.  We're taking some time off in July & August - so after Erika and Peter Mulvey - you'll have a rest from our emails.

The three favorite artists of our group were Peter Mayer, Chris Smither & Erika.  DON'T miss her show next week!   She's off to tour Europe and it will probably be quite a while before we see her in these parts again.  Peter Mulvey was pretty high up there for someone who's only opened here...  The best thing, in our opinion, was that none of the artists scored 3 or below.  From a musical perspective we're interested in talented players and won't be fooled by showmanship.  Folk remains the favored genre with country coming in last.

Friends House Concerts Needs A Logo

  #

We tried to have an outsider design a piece, but the whole sense of community was wrong.  OK, so we made a mistake!  We are now turning to those that we should have in the first place - the Friends House Concert community.  We're all here BECAUSE we love the arts and we've seen works by several members that we would be proud to have put up as a FHC logo.

We know there's a lot going on at the moment - but we'd like to announce contest to design the new logo for Friends House Concerts.  We would like to present a winner at the Peter Mulvey show here at the house on June 4th.  That gives all you creative people out there about a month to work on this project.  We have no presuppositions about what type of art or logo we're looking for.  It could be a painting, a child's drawing, a photo collage, a piece of sculpture or even a work of digital art.

We will proudly display the winning work of art / logo on our website and every newsletter that goes out to 500+ people with proper credit to the artist and/or link to their website.  Eventually we also plan to incorporate it into future not-for-profit Friends House Concert t-shirts.

Register for the contest:  Email or call Whitney (whluckett@aol.com or 385-0031)
Deadline for entries:  Tuesday, June 2nd
Winner to be announced:  Friday June 4th

It Takes A Community...

Huge thanks to all over at Edict: Tor, Andrea, Nick, James, & Paul for all your help over the years.  Without Edict's work and their donation of the Spaces Newsletter technology, this series could not have been as successful as it's been.  Hopefully you'll see a new look on the website soon, but Edict Inc. (www.edict.com) is actually busy with paying customers these days.  Check out their Spaces technology - it's a great & affordable solution for many small business and NPO applications.  Anyway, we have to wait and see when they can fit our upgrade in - but our new logo is in and photographed.

Speaking of imaging, Mark Kemper, www.kemperstudios.com, here in the Springs helped us out and worked up a digital image suitable for website AND t-shirts.  His black and white family portraits are memorable.

What A Great Year!

  #

THANK YOU ALL for making 2003 a great year musically for us all!  We had so many wonderful evenings (and afternoons) of music, and feel truly lucky.  It is your participation in this community that makes such magical musical moments possible.

We apologize for the long silence over the holidays - but anyone that we as here for the Chris Smither / Peter Mulvey shows knows that we ended the season with a bang.  The food and drink that arrived for the Friday night concert was without peer.  Again - thank you for one of our best concerts.

We have all been working hard behind the scenes here to bring you an even stronger line up for 2004 - the year of the Monkey.  We look forward to all of the following in the next several months.  Check out our website for updates:

  • January - Joe Uveges's CD Release Party
  • February - John Gorka
  • April - Peter Mayer
  • Late April - Cosy Sheridan for T.E.S.S.A.
  • May - Erika Luckett
  • ...and maybe one or two others if we're lucky

Remember- this is about all of us, so if you love/hate someone, let us know!

What Is It All About?

  #

No - we're not trying to find a deeper meaning to life - tho it's probably right there in front of our faces.  We're trying to build a community around music - for musicians and those of us aficionados who just sit back and enjoy it.  Check out our website for more details and stories on past artists.

Welcome to the new subscribers...  Since we've had a lot of new faces here recently - we thought it might be a good idea to reiterate the drill.

Friends House Concerts usually buys a keg and puts it out along with a donation pot.  We ask concert goers to also bring a little something to share - a bottle of wine or some sort of munchies.   Good food, old AND new friends & great music - what more could you ask for?

Bring something to pass and we'll see you up on the hill.
Whitney, Marc, Joe & Kristen

Building a community around music

  #

A friend recently approached me to ask if it was OK to bring people along to our house concerts...  My response is that we (Joe, Marc, Kristen & Whitney) are here to build a community around a common love of music - hence the name "Friends House Concerts".  People that don't normally run across one another coming together for a respite from the day-to-day hassles of life.  So.. come one come all - but please reserve your space in advance as a courtesy to our artists.

We want your input on whether or not to set up on line ticketing.  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take a quick minute to answer this.  Because our volume isn't that big - there will be a nominal charge for the on-line tickets - but some may prefer that to going down to the post office....[survey_link]

Welcome to Friends House Concerts

  #

Hi there...

I understand that you're interested in the local COS house concert scene.  We just finished up a great show Sunday night here at the house and have at least 2 more awesome shows this year.  (Maybe 3 if we're lucky!)  Check us out on line at:  www.house-concerts.org

If you're interested in the Chris Smither show - you NEED to get the money headed this way because he will sell out in advance.  Normally people get their checks to us via snail mail to the PO box listed in one of the articles below.  Obviously you need to ignore the Brian Joseph show because he's already come and gone.

Please pass this info on to friends - that's what we're about here.... building a community around music.

Sincerely - Whitney (for Marc, Joe & Kristin)

We are trying something new with this newsletter - you have to let me know if it works.  How about letting the artists speak for themselves?  We picked out a couple of songs that represent our upcoming artists and included them in the articles below.  You will need Real Audio to listen to them. We are not sure how this will work on dial up connections - so please accept our apologies if they are slow to download.  Within each of the following articles are song titles underlined and highlighted.  Just click on them and you will hear the song. (You can also see the newsletters on the website www.house-concerts.org

GIVE ME YOUR INPUT at editor@house-concerts.org and  maybe we can use this to put new artists out to you for YOU to choose the artists...

Also - we have had requests for more female headliners from several directions.  We are working on it and have letters out to a couple of agents.  We will let you know once we firm anything else up.

What are we about?

  #

We founded Friends House Concerts to develop a local community around music.  As a not-for-profit, loosely knit group we:

• Offer artists a place to play where all of money collected goes to the artist and expenses,
• Bring nationally-known artists to the area,
• Offer concert goers a chance to listen to live music in an intimate setting, uninterrupted by talking or clinking glasses, and
• Offer concert goers an opportunity to interact with artists on a personal basis.

We ask all community members to bring something to share: a snack, a bottle of wine or something else to drink and to sit back, relax & enjoy the evening.  Check out our website and pass on the good word...
