Mulvey Returns!

  #

Peter Mulvey remains the most played artist on my Ipod.  There is something so magical about his voice, his mastery of the guitar is attention grabbing.   He just puts me in a good mood!   His lyrics are effortlessly dead on for so many things - affairs of the heart, political messes and life.   How about this one?

"As the yahoos take a hammer to the Great Society,
and all alarms are drown out by the chatter of TV,
There's one question I'm burning to ask it,
where's this headed and why the handbasket?"

While "Knuckleball Suite" or his recordings from the depths of the Boston subway, "Ten Thousand Mornings",  wrestle in my mind for the title of his best album, these clips from "Notes From Elsewhere" are probably most like Peter live at FHC.  Look for us with Peter up in Stratton Open Space on Friday afternoon before this concert in January.

December - Peter Mulvey!

  #

Our last concert of the year will be an evening with the incredible musician Peter Mulvey:    master guitar wizard, erudite song writer and just all around great guy.  The depth in any Mulvey song is incredible from the mastery of tune & rhythm, to the lyrics, even down to the concept of his albums.  (Remember that Peter recorded 10,000 Mornings in the Boston subway, complete with the sound of trains coming and going.)

Peter's latest album that just hit the market this month, Letters From A Flying Machine, again piques our interest.   The frame for this recording is the letters that he has written over the last decade to his nieces & nephews from the road, complete with readings from planes....  The release date was just last week, so I'm not finding any reviews for this press time, but we will update as we find them.

Here is a great recent recording of Peter up at KBCO Studio C up in Boulder.   There is another Youtube video
with almost 16,000 views - proving what an incredible player Mulvey is...

Escape from the craziness of the holiday season and join us where you will NEVER have to fake having a good time!

Mulvey Returns...

  #

Let's fill the house with great music & relax before the holiday onslaught.  Likened to Leo Kotke, Ani DeFranco & Dave Mathews - what more is there to say when Acoustic Guitar Magazine says the following?  "Th[is] rock troubadour makes big strides...agile, funky acoustic guitar...poetic and hip, Mulvey is creating a potent new vision of acoustic rock."   If you haven't heard his music - listen to clips here.  I'm partial to "Knuckleball Suite" but Willy Porter shared last time he was here that his thinks "Rapture" is incredible.

We can't think of a better way to close out 2007 than with Peter Mulvey here at the house.  Peter exemplifies what we think is best about these concerts.  He's bright, insightful about everything, a talented musician and an overall great guy to hang out with.   Take a listen to this NPR story about Peter on tour and then send in your check post haste.

If you send in your checks and Marc & I will put out a holiday spread here in celebration of Peter's new release "NOTES FROM ELSEWHERE".  We've watched his schedule change over the years and he's playing largely overseas now, a sure sign that he's the real thing....   He's an incredible bargain at $15 per ticket.

Peter Mulvey in December

  #

A sister venue in CO contacted us about Peter Mulvey - and we found that there was so many good things to say about him...  He's a perennial favorite of ours and he'll close out our season here at FHC in December.

Check out either his webpage or his My Space page for sound clips.  His last album - Knuckleball Suite just gets better everytime that I play it...   Help us close out our 5th year on a high note.

Ending Our 5th Year On A High Note

  #

Peter will never forget sliding down our driveway and demolishing our neighbor's fence...  And that's great with us - because we want him to continue coming out to see us!  It seems like it’s been ages since Peter was here, so we’re looking forward to our December concert. Peter is making some pretty cool statements these days, like biking to all of his gigs in Southern Wisconsin.  (He's got some great tunes on the myspace player there...)

We just love the tenor of his voice and admire his songcraft.  Come spend a Sunday evening with us before the Holiday season arrives and we all get stressed out.  Kick back, close your eyes and enjoy Peter Mulvey, live, here with us.  Just a bit of inside gossip – If I’m not mistaken, Peter’s been spending time with our buddy Willy Porter these days.

Next Wednesday!

  #
Of all the artists we have had here over the last 5 years, Peter's music is the most played music on my iPod.  For those that saw the Chris Smither concerts several years ago - Peter & Goody were the opening act.  Peter's new CD released just last month, The Knuckleball Suite, lives up to all his past endeavors.  The description of the CD itself is intriguing:

A knuckleball leaves a pitcher's fingertips, and what happens next is anybody's guess. Batters (and catchers) will tell you that what, from the stands, looks like a straightforward toss is actually a floating, dancing mystery, impossible to pin down. Its path is unpredictable; it is a hidebound enigma.

The Knuckleball Suite was recorded in two and a half days, with a cadre of world-class improvising musicians who had not rehearsed a single note of the songs together. It is not Jazz, but it is a Jazz approach. The years of study and refinement, theory and practice, are present, but are shrugged off at the doorstep of the studio. In there, it's rapport and intuition, spontaneity and spark. What gets spoken is the barest essentials: "Tag it twice?", "End on four to one, yes?" What is unspoken is every leap, listen, and turn. And what remains is usually take two, sometimes take three. Each track is a warm, large-format photograph of a gifted musical posse, caught in the very moment of Making It All Up. Out of thin air. For real.

We can't think of a better way to usher OUT the school year and welcome in the lazy days of summer.  Grab a friend and join us for a mid-week concert with Peter here at the house.  .

The concerts are selling out this year... you really don't want to miss any of the upcoming.  We are at least 25% and up to 50% sold out on the remaining concerts.   Remember - you can date the checks for the month that the artist is here...

I was looking through the
quotes on Peter Mulvey and I just couldn't pick one - so you decide - what would catch your eye?   Check out Peter's website here for links to songs.

Peter Mulvey On Board

  #
UPDATE:  Peter really changed the website - including a review of a song from the new album on NPR's All Songs Considered on the news page of the site.  The links below ARE working...

Boy is this year filling up!  Still working on what we talked about at the concert - BUT just worked out a deal to bring Peter Mulvey here in late May.  We could only find a spot on a Wednesday in late May, we hope that works for y'all.

As people go - Peter is probably our favorite artist to just have here hanging out at the house.   As a reviewer once said:  There are only 2 types of people in this world, people who love Peter Mulvey and people who haven't met him yet.

"Old Simon Stimson" is a cut from his new CD, due out April 18th, on his website.  The song sounds every bit as wonderful as his last several efforts.  (I can hear Goody in there...can't you?!)  Take a listen to any of the tunes from Kitchen Radio to get a feel for his music.

Quick Mulvey Wrap Up

  #

Thank you to all who came out - we know what a busy month May is.  The best description I've heard of matters surrounding Mr. Mulvey is as follows. There are two types of people in this world:  those who love Peter and those who have never met him.

Peter did not disappoint at the June concert here on Polaris Drive.  His ability to cross music genres caught some concertgoes pleasantly by surprise - from Irish reel to the blues stopping in on the 1920's for a quick exploration of popular song.  He was witty, talented and wonderful.   We look forward to his next stop through Colorado.  Pick up his latest - Kitchen Radio and we guarantee you'll love it.

More Praise For Peter

Peter MulveyWe're surprised that there is still room for the Peter Mulvey show - so call if you want to catch this awesome singer songwriter at an intimate concert here at the house.  Still undecided, take a look here at a recent review.

This is going to be the last concert of the Summer - so come enjoy a great evening here with the crickets in the background and a glass of cold beer or good wine.  For back articles on Peter with links to his songs, check out our website here:

Come join us for a great start to the summer...

  #

We're pretty psyched about bringing Peter Mulvey back in June.  The concert is going to be here at the house - so seats are limited to 100.  We're almost 1/2 sold out already.  Peter opened for Chris Smiter last November and boy were we blown away.  I think that Peter is flying solo this trip, so Goody won't be joining him.  Take a look at the reviews on Peter's website for an idea of the depth of his work.

Peter just released his eigth album "Kitchen Radio" and wow is it hot!  Take a listen to "29 cent head" or "Sad Sad Sad" for great cuts from this CD.  (For obvious reasons, Sad Sad Sad will NOT be played on the radio...)  There is also a great review of his work on the same CD Baby page. For bits from his earlier works check our "The Trouble with Poets" or "Oliver's Army" from his last album recorded in the Boston Subway w/ Goody producing.

All I'll say is that it's no accident that the same firm represents Chris Smither, Scott Miller & Peter Mulvey.  (Oops... my knees are going weak again...)  Join us for another amazing evening of music.  But don't wait too long - there won't be an open seat for this one.

Peter Mulvey Again!

  #

Anybody who saw the Chris Smither show back in November got a preview of this talented singer / songwriter.  Come watch Peter face our neighbor whose fence they slid through on that snowy Saturday!  Peter's 10,000 Mornings remains one of my most listened to CDs.  By the time that he gets here in June his latest album "Kitchen Radio" will be on the merch table.  (Check out "29 cent head" and Peter played "Sad Sad Sad" here last fall)  Take a look at what had to say about our boy just a few months ago:  "Peter Mulvey shows, rather than tells, the details of his songs' emotional landscapes... He favors plain-spokenness over screams and thoroughness over speed... Walt Whitman-like catalogues of images that blended into cinematic visions of love and corruption... [the] audience was riveted to every note."  This show will be a real treat...

Another show you really don't want to miss.  Cancel vacation plans (we put ours off a bit for this one...) and we'll see you there.

Check him out:  Crocodile Man on the lastest release, and High Heeled Sneakers for other work from the bluesman...  His website has all kinds of clips & reviews - but he's even better live.

Added Bonus: Peter Mulvey

  #

We have a VERY pleasant surprise for you... Peter Mulvey will open for Chris (the only reason I do house concerts) Smither .  Wow... that was all we could say when Peter's agent sent his latest release "ten thousand mornings".  WBUR Boston had this to say about the album:

"The album starts funky led by Mulvey's signature rythmic slap guitar style (reminiscent of Ani DiFranco), but then calms down into sad, quiet songs. "In Germany Before the War," a dark Randy Newman ballad, major and minor keys clash like notes in a broken music box, then resolve in the achingly beautiful refrain, "I'm looking at the river, but I'm thinking of the sea." The songs exude more energy toward the end, but the lyrics are still largely plaintive and dissatisfied ("And I would rather be anywhere else but here today.") While not a personal statement in the conventional sense, "Ten Thousand Mornings" conveys something meaningful about Mulvey. These are songs he loves so much he has made them his own. His full, slightly raspy voice lingers in the listener's ear."

We are 1/3 sold out (cash in hand) at this point.  The concert is here at the house so the limit is 100 - no exceptions EVEN for friends - sorry..

'Nough Said...

OK...maybe just one more bit of Chris' guitar to listen to...  Listen for the 'Nawlins roots in "No Love Today" and the tale of hard times in "The Devil's Real".  We have not seen Peter in concert, but his last album is inspiring.  I've been having trouble pulling up his sound clips but click here for his website.
