A Cold Night In February With Willy Porter Up On The Hill

  #

It's been way too long since Willy's been here with us.  Willy's been busy with all kinds of projects:  producing albums for others (including Natalia Z.), touring with Carpa Diem and even playing the part of a professors at Fender Guitar's University.  Look at this man's chops on Moonbeam or get a feel for his shows with the intro to Paper Airplane...  (The video quality is pretty bad, but the memory of his similar intro here at the house is one of THE most incredible performances we've had here...)

What never fails to impress us is the self deprecating humor that goes hand in hand with the incredible talent we see here time and time again.   We've had a couple of big checks come in for this concert, so make sure that you reserve your seats for this soon.

October - Willy & Natalia - Tickets Gone

Quick Ticket Update:  Concert is SOLD OUT

What better way to return to concerts than a MIX of our old favorites?  We snagged Willy Porter who released his new CD this summer: How To Rob A Bank.   If possible, this release is garnering even more praise than usual including the following.

World-renowned guitarist Greg Koch had this to say about Porter's new disc: "you get the same feeling listening to it as you do from one of his solo gig's...that you are in the presence of greatness..." Each song is a fresh cross-pollination of styles, genres and musical forms. In the Woody Guthrie-informed, would-be bank robber's pre-heist confessional title track:

[Porter] sings the bailout blues: 'You can't walk in there brazen with an Uzi like Patty Hearst /I'm gonna secure myself a seat on the board of directors first / That's how you rob a bank.' Given the cyclical nature of corporate scandals, it's likely that How To Rob A Bank — and the rest of Porter's new album...will remain timely for years to come... (The Onion)

This review covers his gig at the Grammy museum with Raining Jane last month.  He's' obviously making waves and we're excited to have him here in October.

Just because she's SO fantastic, a quick word about Natalia Zukerman.  She's been through a couple of times before headlining evenings.   If you haven't seen her - you won't want to mis what has been called "A voice that can coax orchids into bloom and a guitar that can open beer bottles with its teeth?!"

Back Again...

  #

I will be forever indebted to Lisa / Gurney for introducing us to Willy Porter.   We're lucky enough to have him here at the house for the 4th year running later this summer.  We do mean "lucky" because Willy is cutting back on touring, concentrating more on producing other’s music.  FHC is still in his sights, so we’re safe this year!

For those unfamiliar with Mr. Porter’s abilities, the following quote from David Schultz of Earvolution  is dead on:  “What Porter does with an acoustic guitar is simply masterful and needs to be seen in a live setting. Porter’s fingers glide across the fretboard with a natural ease that seems otherworldly, as if he’s channeling a higher musical force. Often it’s difficult to believe that many of the sounds coming from his guitar are actually being played with his fingers. On “Breathe,” he moves from a lilting leisurely opening into a breakneck pace that he remarkably sustains throughout the entire song. “   The reviewer then goes on to talk about Willy’s amazing ability to adlib a song with the crowd and his genuine, self-deprecating sense of humor.

It will be a great show and it will sell out quickly.

Be Careful What You Ask For

Most of you know how passionate I am about stopping Domestic Violence, well, now it's actually going to benefit all of you. Just yesterday we were hoping to take the summer off, but our old friend Willy Porter stepped in to perform at a private benefit for TESSA and we're going to tie it into a Friends House Concert.  Willy will be here at the house on Friday June 8, 2007.   THEN we're going to take that break we wanted...

Willy is one of the most gifted artists we've had here at the house and it is a pleasure to welcome him back here for the third year running.  If you know nothing else about him - know that his concerts sell out immediately.   If you have any interest in seeing him here in June, send us a check made out to the artist immediately.

For those of you Willy newbies - check out the music on his website, THEN get your check in the mail.

Community & Willy Porter Pictures

As we close out the year here, we just want to say thanks to those of you who come together to form the community around Friends House Concerts.  It's been another great year with you and we appreciate all the support that you've given this year.   We're trying to figure out something for the 50th concert next year and believe me, we're shooting for the moon!

I think that my dad once said that he who dies with the best stories wins...  And where do those stories come from?  They come from community.  From the bonds that we form with people at work, at church  at play, or from our children's school.  There are so many unique & talented people that make up our community here at FHC.

Speaking of community -
here is a bunch of shots from the night of the Willy Porter concert.  Wait until you have some time to look at these... almost 70 photos from evening!

A MAJOR thanks Wendy Pearce Nelson who donated her services for the night, even when she was backed up at work just returning from her honeymoon!  We were struck by how accurately she captured the mood of the evening and humbly thank her for her addition to the community here...  You should think about her for any photos you need taken.

October at the House: Going, Going, Gone!

  #

When we host Willy Porter here at the house, I feel like we've slipped into a world beyond the world we know.  In the words of Jimmy Buffet: "The word goes out from Melbourne to the Keys.  The faithful get the message like it's written on the breeze..."  We have NOT publicized this concert, but checks have been arriving for this show since last January.

I hesitate to even mention the Willy Porter show because it's all but sold out with only a handful of seats left for our Mid-October show.  We will be setting up a waiting list to use if tickets become available.  Willy is an incredible artist - take a quick look through his site to get an idea of his level of artistry.  It's truly hard to think of more engaging artist we've had.  It will be another guaranteed magical evening.  Those with tickets should consider themselves very lucky....

Willy Porter Tonight

  #

Hey guys - this is a sold out concert - DO NOT encourage anyone to show up at the door.  We will turn away people at the door who are not on the list because we have been returning checks to people this week.

Heads up - I would have extra money in my pocket for CDs, cuz I think that there is something special in the works...

Jeff  -  doors open at 6:45 pm..

Also, (perhaps MOST IMPORTANTLY) due to an ordering snafu on our part - we won't have a keg here tonight, so beer drinkers - please BYOB.  Marc assures me that this is OK, cuz yáll come for the music, not the beer, right?

Another Sellout

  #
We're very sorry to report that the Willy Porter show for next weekend is sold out.   Those who are coming will enjoy a first class show - we've even had calls from Los Angeles on this show.  If you have spoken with one of us in the last day or so, please make sure that you get your check to us or your name will be mud...

If you are at all interested in our last 2 shows of the year - get your checks in the mail.  We only have limited seat available for both Zoe Lewis & Catie Curtis.

Anybody who's seen Willy raves about him.  We have a pile-o-checks here already for the October 14th show.  A quick look at the venues that Willy's playing in gives you an idea of the talent wrapped up in this fingerstyle player.  We are INCREDIBLY fortunate to have him play here at the house.  We can't stress enough how unusual it is for him to play in such a small venue...   As with all our concerts, NO SEATS held for people on this one.  We have to have a check in hand folks because there are only about 20 seats left.

We find Willy's website a bit difficult to manage, so here's a look at his music on Amazon.

Willy Porter In October

  #
Guys - we've been exceedingly lucky this year booking acts that don't really want to be house concerts.  Part of it is undoubtably because yáll are a great, great audience.  Willy Porter is one of the artists that really doesn't like the house concert - but we have one fan who talked him into the concert - thank you John!

Check out Willy's music here - we've had a couple of mass bookings for him already - 8 people coming down from Denver, etc.

Please note that the concert if FRIDAY night, not Thursday as on earlier emails...

Another Coup

  #

We successfully booked Willy Porter here this Fall.  We’re sure that the pressure from fans here is what finally threw it over the edge.  Willy’s guitar playing is “awesome wicked man” (oops… I guess I was in Hawaii a bit too long, huh?)  There is one caveat my friends, in order to keep bring y’all such good shows, we need to make sure that we have good showing across the board.  We’ll see you here soon, ja?

Despite this town's tendency towards last minute reservations, the September show for Christine Lavin is almost 50% sold out at this point.  We actually arrived home from vacation to find 6 messages about her concert alone.  Many of the checks received are not normal house concert goers.  If you have ANY interest in Christine – you really should get your check in pronto.  This could very well be the best concert of the season – she is without a doubt the most famous of our 2005 artists.   I've never been up close & personal with someone who Lincoln Center commissioned to compose and debut music.  Don’t’ get shut out of this one - remember seats are limited.

We recently had several  concertgoers request us to bring Willy Porter in.  We danced around with his agent and they gave us an October date about a week away from the Zoe show.  Can I count on y'all to support 2 shows in such a short time?    Here is a recent review of a Willy show in Cleveland and here are links to some of his music.  The average rating of the CD was 5 stars and reveiws below were incredible.  Now Zoe is coming with her full band - that's an evening of incredible energy.  The question to you is can we get your support on BOTH concerts?
