Erika & Lisa Return to FHC

  #

The tight harmonies and red hot guitar playing of Lisa & Erika will be back here for the first time in three years.  The duo has cut back significantly on touring these days, so we're just happy to have them here.   The best intro we can give is a look at this video.   Lisa's smooth jazzy voice blends incredibly with Erika's world inspired music for an unforgettable evening.

Friday July 10th is going to be a very special evening as it combines the magic of music and Lucketts with the celebration of FINALLY getting a kitchen worthy of Marc's culinary skills.   Join us up on the hill for a summer evening that will linger pleasantly in your mind for years to come.

Erika Luckett & Lisa Ferraro
Date:  Friday, July 10, 2015
Time:   7:30 PM

FHC 50th Concert

  #

We will celebrate our 50th house concert this January back with Erika Luckett - the inspiration for the whole venture.  Erika was the 4th Luckett to graduate from FVS and went on to Berklee School of Music in Boston.   The family's latin roots feature prominently in her music, but so do the blues and even shade of Willie Nelson every once and a while.   She's an incredible artist & songwriter...   You can get a feel for her music here.

Opening for Erika will be Cape Breton style fiddler, Cheye Pagel.   Perhaps a small anecdote will win you over...   She was playing in a church a while back and after she finished, Keb' Mo (THE Keb'Mo) stood up saying that she inspired him so much that he would break his taboo and play in a church.   That says it all, folks!

Celebrate 50 Shows With Erika & FHC

  #
It doesn't seem like it's possible, but as of 2008 we're embarking on our 6th year and January is our 50th Show.   We decided that the most thoughtful way to celebrate this milestone was to go back to the beginning.   We ALL have Erika to thank for the existence of Friends House Concerts.   It was her suggestion all those years ago that spurred us into action.   Initially it was her contacts that brought those first artists in and her spirit of community that we hope to emulate.

Check out Erika's website for some interesting new twists, including her new section on her circle of heroes.   She's living her ideals by performing next year at the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize Forum honoring the founder of the Grameen Bank.    Her music is  fuller than ever after her recent European tour - and we look forward to basking in her art.  Her last release, the 2006 Album of the Year - Just Plain Folks, brought in the following press:  "World Inspired Singer/Songwriter. Music that sounds like it was born from a weekend adventure with Sting, Annie Lennox, Carlos Santana and Bebel Gilberto."

New Music In The Making

  #
Most of you have seen Erika once or twice, so I won't belabor you here with a list of her talents.   Please click on these stories for a more complete rundown on our March artist.   You might not know this though - Erika was the original inspiration for this whole house concert series.   We hear her voice as we go forward every month and we try to heed her advice...

Erika has some great new songs in the works, so even if you have heard her, we highly recommend joining us in March.  Her most recent creation, "Awe" can be heard on her My Space page.

You'll come away from this concert wondering how Erika manages to make SO MUCH music out of a normal guitar.

March - Erika Luckett

  #
Erika Luckett was honored last month in LA, in a room buzzing with musicians and industry folks from around the world, "Unexpected" was honored as Album of the Year by Just Plain Folks, the world's largest music organization.

That means that of the over 25,500 albums that were screened, "Unexpected" was chosen as the top. In addition to winning Album of the Year, "Unexpected" also pulled in the award for Best Album in the Female Singer/Songwriter category. So now, in addition to being lauded as "International Music CD of the Year" by the World Arts Celebrities Journal, "Unexpected" has gained this prestigious recognition.  Erika will be here in March - mark your calendars!  CD Baby touts her as a "World Inspired Singer/Songwriter. Music that sounds like it was born from a weekend adventure with Sting, Annie Lennox, Carlos Santana and Bebel Gilberto."   Take a listen to her CDs here.

Kicking off the 2006 Year here at FHC

  #

Returning to the house after 4 years – Erika will be here on Polaris Drive in January to kick off the next season of Friends House Concerts.  Mark Thursday January 26th on your calendar and send a check on this way.  We’re not sure that the house can handle the energy – but if we managed Zoe & the Rubber Band, I’m sure that we can muddle through!

Erika has been very busy mixing a new CD and (hopefully) will have this ready to sell in January at the house.  It’s a bit redundant to introduce Erika to most of you, so click HERE for links to older stories on the artist and HERE for good links to her music.  Her music is a unique blending of jazz, blues, Latin & American roots music.  Some of my personal favorites are:   Unexpected, Dust, Ghosty & Kindess.  Seats are limited and on a first come, first serve basis.  Don't miss Erika up close & personal here at the house...

Concert Slideshow & Photos

  #

Finally, we have the slideshow up from The Warehouse concert.  The pictures are courtesy of our generous & talented friend Matt Chmielarczyk.  When he's not taking great photos you can find him down at the locally owned outdoor shop & institution:  Mountain Chalet - "don't trust anyone under 14,000 ft".  We hope that you enjoy the show!  (I can't seem to get the photos in the order I want them... but time's a wasting.)

Erika Wrap-up

  #

According to Kevin Henkes in Lily & her purple plastic purse:  ""Wow" that was all that she could say."  What an incredible evening!  Even if Erika wasn't a relative - I would still say that she's incredible.  For the 100th time (though you do flatter me) Marc DID NOT change his name to Luckett, he was always related to Erika!  It was great to see the standing ovation at the end, and almost at half time when she did my personal favorite "Dust".

Lisa we missed you - Happy Birthday many times over!  What an amazing display of community at the end - people helping us load up the cars - Kent - you 'da bomb!  Blake got up bright and early on Sunday - BEFORE HE LEFT FOR TURKEY ON SUNDAY - to help again with the chairs.  Thanks to you ALL!!

We met so many new people there at the concert - we hope you'll join us at upcoming shows.  There will be link to a slide show soon.

Hat's off to the CS Indy!

  #

Wow - thanks to the CS Independent for their review this week of Erika's newest release "Unexpected"!  This is the first critic's review of her music that really gets it.  Aaron was right on when he wrote:

"Crisp, enticing vocals, exceptionally adept guitar work, an intriguing sensibility of Latin flavor and poetic lyricism that thrives on simplicity are staples of Luckett's most recent work. Identifying her talent is simple; identifying her style is a thorny issue of deconstruction, which is boring and pointless..."

Erika also garnered the cover of Pure Music this month, Issue 51.  MORE IMPORTANTLY - HERE are links to the new songs, so you can hear some of the clips that we've been raving about.

And... you need to contact us at 329-1644 if you're coming out, we would have sold out long ago if this were at the house.  When you make out checks - PLEASE make them out to Erika Luckett.

CD Release Concert

  #

The details are finally set!  Join us in March for Erika's CD release party at The Warehouse.  We're a bit biased here - but we all predict that you will love the latest CD "Unexpected".  Talk about the stars coming together... the picture above was recently the home page of Taylor Guitars - complete with Erika's picture front & center.

OH... Donald Fagen of Steely Dan fame was sitting in on one of Erika's recent concerts in Hawaii - and his agent called the next morning asking if she wanted to come over and play on his new Brazillian album... They keep telling me that Kauai is magical, but this is ridiculous.

One of the highlights of the new CD is Erika's the rich tapestry of Erika's lyrics - like the following from the title song "Unexpected" written right here in Colorado Springs "You came so unexpected, turned up when I least suspected. You're the flat round stone that skipped across my smooth surface, making me want what I don't know I missed..."  Hot...  As this is the CD release tour, we don't have a link to the newest songs, but check out CD Baby for Erika's last 3 solo CDs.

Join us for a memorable evening in a new venue we're excited about.

Update on Erika - March CD Release Party

  #
Just in from California:  Erika Luckett won FEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR at the JPF music awards, the largest music awards ceremony in history. Over 10,000 albums and 140,000 songs from 85 countries around the world were reviewed for this award. The ceremony was held Sunday, November 7 at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana. Bands from Japan, Africa and Europe performed as well as a slew of performers from the United States. This remarkable organization honors independent musicians and has become the biggest independent music organization in the world.  Sponsors for the evening's events included:  ASCAP, Disc Makers, Virgin Records & CD Baby.

What's more - her debut film "The Californians" starring Noah Wiley is set to premier within the next 6 months as well.  Hats off to Erika!  With a full compliment of very talented musicians - "Unexpected", the new CD produced by Jeffrey Wood at Fantasy Studios in CA, is amazing.  Even to those of us who know every word of every song, the breadth of the music on this CD is impressive.   Moreover - the title song was first performed a private concert to benefit TESSA right here in l'il 'ol Colorado Springs.  (Thank you Kent & Ann!)  Make sure that you catch her CD release party in Colorado Springs on March 12th.

Check out "Kindness" or "Ghosty" on this page or "Postcard from Graceland" or "Can't keep a Woman" here or "Evangelina" on her first solo CD.  Imagine any of these 10x better - and you have the new CD - we'll see you in March!

Tickets Going Quickly for Erika

  #

Don't miss out on another evening of great music.  The stories from Fantasy Studios are just awesome.  Y'all can say that you saw her way back when.  I understand that advance of this new CD are going to be available at the concert.  Checks for Erika's concert in next month are rolling in - so don't wait too long.  The BAC has made some neat changes and it's going to be a great night.  Even the artwork on the walls goes well with Erika's music.

For those not familiar with Erika's music - you can get a feel for her on her website.  She's part funk, part latin, part folk, part blues - a product of many worlds all wrapped up in one dynamic singer songwriter.  "Evangalina" off her first solo album takes us behind the obvious.  The bluesy cut "Can't keep a woman" is always a good to loose yourself in.  Either of the following from her last CD cut live in Naw'lins win my vote for best of - "Ghosty" or "Kindness".  (Can you hear Renee in the background of Kindness on the CD?!)  The album recorded last month is almost all new music - settle in for a great evening next month.

Erika anyone?

  #

Well, we locked her down on a concert date.  She called from "Fantasy Studios" in SF where she is recording IN THE STUDIO NEXT to Carlos Santana ON THE EXACT SAME MIKES as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.   Oh - and Carlos was going to drop by to listen to a couple of the tracks she's laying down.

I'm not making any of this up.  Erika's recording a whole patch of new songs (along with one of our favorites "Ghosty") with veteran record producer Jeffrey Woods.   We're just incredibly happy for her.  This will sell out...

Erika on the Horizon

  #
Erika has so much going on these days!  She played the part of a singer songwriter in a movie with Noah Wylie filmed last Fall which will premier at the Cannes Film Festival soon.  In March she heads into the studio with Grammy nominated producer Jeffrey Woods to cut her next CD.  BUT - family connections allow us a bit closer contact with this artist - so we're looking to fix a May concert here in the Springs.  Keep your calenders open.

I just caught Joe yesterday and he was deep into his creative mode.  He told me that he'll probably only have 1 of his old songs at the concert, the rest will be new.  What a treat!

Plan Ahead and Save Money

  #

(I'm really resending because the telephone number on the last email was wrong..  I apologize)

Just a quick reminder to y’all:  It’s cheaper to buy your tickets in advance for the T•E•S•S•A concert than to buy them at the door ($20 in advance, $25 at the door).  Erika won Acoustic Guitar’s Best Independently Produced Album of 2001 for her CD My Little Crime.  Not resting on her laurels, she came right back in late 2002 with her sultry voice, sharp eye for social convention and intricate fingerstyling on The New Orleans Sessions recorded with Grammy winning producer Ethan Allen in the Crescent City.  (The recording sessions were AWESOME – you can even hear the Lucketts squawking in the background of the “bonus track”.)  See www.erikaluckett.com for more info.

We are truly looking forward to hearing Joe Uveges’ latest creations.  I’m a bit apprehensive that he’s slid over to the country side of things, but his dog hasn’t died, Kristen is still around AND as far as I can see – he hasn’t succumb to a life of gambling or hard drinking.  But hey, ‘ya never know.

Please get your reservations into:
