10 Ways You Can Stop Violence Against Women

  #

  1. Break the Silence:  Encourage discussion about interpersonal and sexual violence at home, at work and in schools.
  2. Start Prevention Early:  Tell the kids in your life it's NEVER okay to hurt someone.  Teach them about respect and show them how to deal with conflict.
  3. Support Your Local Shelter:  Help TESSA raise the funds necessary to run s services by donating money, personal care items or used cell phones.
  4. Disappoint An Abuser:  If you witness an incident of domestic violence or sexual violence, report it.  Abusers count on individuals staying silent in order to continue their abuse.
  5. Change The Climate Of Tolerance:  When family members, friends or co-workers make inappropriate remarks and jokes about women, challenge them.
  6. Men - Get In The Movement:  It's important we all recognize this is not just a women's issue.  Men should talk to other men about the importance of treating everyone with respect.
  7. Volunteer:  Join TESSA's volunteer team and work one-on-one with survivors or help out with a special event.
  8. Familiarize Yourself With Community Resources:  When someone close to you asks for help, you'll be able to share what you've learned and provide a variety of options.
  9. Stay Informed:  Visit www.tessacs.org for more information about TESSA's work.
  10. Spread The Word:  Pass these ideas onto others so they can learn about how to stop violence against women.

Christine Lavin Concert For TESSA

  #
Thank you all for your patience.   The details of the Christine Lavin show are finally in place.

The Colorado Springs School has donated their Louisa Auditorium to host this benefit for TESSA.  Christine is loads of fun and we can't imagine what she'll come up with for a Halloween show...

Christine has been hanging around the NYC folk scene since the Washington Square days.  The stories she tells are incredible.  Last year I picked her up in Fort Collins at about 11:30 PM and we laughed the whole way home. For someone who's played Lincoln Center in New York, she's wonderfully accessible.  The best place to find her music is here, click on any of the albums and take a listen.  Take years off your life laughing with Christine in October.

Please make all checks out to TESSA.  Tickets for the concert will be $25 in advance.

Springtime in the Rockies!

  #

We regret to announce the cancellation of the Cosy Sheridan Benefit for TESSA this evening.  We just got off the phone w/ Cosy.  Albeit it's only raining in Glenwood Springs - weather and roads between here and there are going to prevent her to Colorado Springs.   April 22 and we get 10 inches of snow?!  I will try to leave messages for all the checks we have in hand.  We WILL reschedule the concert and advise you soon of the new details.

The most depressing aspect is that we actually had TV 5/30 coming out to the concert tonight.  ARGH!   I need to work with TESSA and Kaiser Permanente to come up with a new date.  Trying to look on the bright side, we discovered and fixed a hitch in our PO Box on this concert and checks in the future will not be returned to people if "Friends House Concerts" is not on the envelope.

Why join us on April 23rd?

  #

At the T.E.S.S.A. benefit on April 23rd, we're not going to get up and bombard you with presentations.  We're just going to say "Thanks for your support" and enjoy yet another wonderful evening of music.

If you're on the edge about the ticket price - please consider the following. T.E.S.S.A - formerly the Center For The Prevention Of Domestic Violence - works day in and out to try and prevent domestic violence and sexual assault.   T.E.S.S.A is the only organization in El Paso County solely dedicated to serving victims of domestic violence and (adult) sexual assault through its confidential safehouse, advocacy, and counseling.   As idyllic as Colorado Springs appears, we live in a violent community.

  • According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, they respond to approximately 36,000 domestic violence (DV) calls per year.  US Census data put Colorado Springs population at 360,890 people.
  • The CSPD makes about 3,500-4,000 DV related arrests each year.
  • DV related homicides in Colorado Springs:  1991-2002 = 22% of total homicides, 2002 = 44% of total homicides.
  • T.E.S.S.A. received over 40,000 client service calls per year.
  • Of the 8 child fatalities in 2002 and 2003, 50% were DV related

Think about it - isn't T.E.S.S.A an organization worth supporting?  We hope to see you on April 23rd for just another evening of great music!

An evening of great acoustic folk music...

  #

Check out this link to a half hour NPR program with Cosy Sheridan aired in New Hampshire earlier this year.  It gives a great idea of what it's like to spend the afternoon with her.  (What other prep school student do YOU know that convinced her advisor that her senior thesis should be to learn how to play music in a bar?!)  Cosy & TR are playing later in April in a concert to benefit the local domestic violence & sexual assault counseling center, T.E.S.S.A.

Folk music is about, well - folks like us.  Cosy takes universal truths that you think live only in the deep dark recesses of your own mind and puts them out there for everyone to laugh at.  Marc & I (courtesy of Rob Gordon) had a ball listening to Cosy's "Anthym" album several years ago, so we trekked up to see Cosy & TR up in Denver at Swallow Hill.  Her live performance was even more phenomenal so we immediately fell in love with their show and snagged them to play here BEFORE we even had this great website.  Check out Multiply Pierced or the Barbie Song for a smattering of her smart wit.

TR is no slouch as a singer / songwriter either.   CD Baby's description of his music as "neo-traditional acoustic music grounded in swing, ragtime, blues and country traditions. These influences, coupled with his award-winning lyric style, makes for a repetoire rich in variety and contrast: lively, soulful, worldly, whimsical, poetic, insightful" is dead on.  Check out TR's work here.  Listen to "A Fool Who Would Not Rush In" and "Gadget Daddy" for a quick sampling of his work and then get your check into the PO Box while there are still seats available.

Don't miss a chance to support a truly amazing local organization, T.E.S.S.A., along with all the lives that they touch AND enjoy the evening with Cosy & TR.  Thanks to Kaiser Permanente for underwriting the cost of concert and to the Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado for donating this wonderful space.  It's a bit more expensive than our normal concerts - but then again, it's tax deductible and for a great cause!  Make your check out to T.E.S.S.A. and we will get a receipt out to you.  Seating is limited.

T.E.S.S.A. Benefit Concert

  #

We try to host an annual concert to benefit TESSA during April, the designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month.  This year we have a wonderful double billing for the concert this year:  Cosy Sheridan and T R Ritchie.  We had them here at the house about a year ago and their performance was memorable.  Both of these gifted singer / songwriters have the ability to show us the extraordinary in the mundane day to day grind that we all slog through.  Cosy will have you laughing and crying within minutes...

Check them both out - it's worth it.  On Cosy's website  check out "Multiply Pierced" and "The Barbie Song" for a smattering of Cosy's sharp wit and TR's site has a couple of clips under Recordings.

The proceeds of this evening will go directly to T.E.S.S.A. formerly known as the Center For The Prevention Of Domestic Violence.  Kaiser Permanente deserves a huge round of applause again this year for underwriting the costs of the concert and for their growing support of T.E.S.S.A.  We also thank the Gay and Lesbian Fund For Colorado for graciously donating the space for the concert.  Seats are limited.

Do your little bit to help others and enjoy a great evening of music....

We forgot that most of you call in the evenings or on weekends for tickets to the show.  As result, it's been a bit tough to get through to T.E.S.S.A. at a time convenient for y'all.

So... please call the Lucketts at 385-0031 before Friday and we will get your name on a list to make sure that you pay the lower "in advance".  If you leave a message, please be sure to leave us your telephone number so we can call back and confirm details.

What is T.E.S.S.A.?

  #

I realize that these are issues rarely talked about, but please lend me your ear for just a moment.

Each year, the organization serves over 10,000 victims. (Think about the 17 community members we lost to domestic violence in the last 12 months - or the spate of rapes out at the AFA...)

Erika & Joe agreed to perform again this year again in a benefit concert for this much needed organization.

HUGE KUDOS go out to Kaiser Permanente who graciously stepped in to sponsor the concert.  This means that all your donations will help the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
